When I met Flipper

Hi there, well as this is my first attempt at a blog post I wanted to write about something that is important to me. I look back at some of the things I have been lucky enough to do and one of the ones that stands out is when I met the Dolphins in Miami. This was something I had always wanted to do, I absolutely love Dolphins, they fascinate me so when we booked the Miami trip I looked into the Miami Seaaquarium and was able to book a time to go and swim with them.

So on a lovely September morning in South Beach Miami myself, Mike and Iain got up at 7 in the morning to make our way to the Sea Aquarium. This was very good of Mike and Iain to get up this early on their holiday, as I was the only one getting in the water. We arrived before it opened, as my slot was the first of the day. As it was the quiet time of the year I found out that instead of joining a group of up to 10 people in the water I was on my own, so that meant I had two trainers and both Dolphins all to myself for the 20 – 30 minutes that I was in the water. This made it even more special as I got to spend a lot more time playing and learning about the two Dolphins. I did have to put on a wet suit which I have to admit wasn’t my finest hour and can safely say I look awful in one. So as I said I got to spend a good 20-30 minutes in the water with these amazing creatures learning about their nature, behavior, learning some of the signals to make them jump, swim and other tricks, I got to pose for some great pictures and I can still remember thinking how big they were. The Dolphins enclosure was the set where the original Flipper series was filmed and the Dolphins they had were descendants from the original Flipper, which was a fun interesting fact. They also had a photographer taking photos during the session, now I usually don’t like looking at pictures of myself but these are ones I can look at over and over again as it is such a happy memory.

After the session was over and the Dolphins splashed me on my way out I got changed. Then myself, Mike and Iain spend the rest of the day at the Aquarium, as it was now open to the public, which turned out to be a very good day.

Here are some pictures of the day, which I will cherish for a long time. If you ever get chance to swim with Dolphins I would strongly recommend it, as it’s a wonderful experience.

Wow, the photos look great, I can’t believe how quiet it was there, I went to a dolphin park in Mexcico on a day when all of Mexiico were there. The water for the dolphins was grey and we had to get out of the water at one point as the male dolphin was exerting his power over the females against what the trainers wanted them to do and things got a bit scary, but then they put us back in with them.!!.. Needless to say I wasn’t able to enjoy my “swim” as much as you did. This is where I also met a Manotee, who are huge, wobbly and hungry, maybe I’m not cut out to get too close to nature.
